It’s the Greatest Game in the World!

It’s a long season, that baseball season. 162 games long. It’s still early in the season, so every game at this point isn’t the most important.  It’s after the All-Star Game that teams have to really step up their games.

Baseball is divided into 2 leagues.  The main difference between them is that in the National League, the pitchers get at-bats.  In the American League, they use designated hitters.  It’s because of this that American League lineups are stronger.  Each League is divided into 3 divisions (East, Central & West).

This will be the AL East edition, but expect every division to be broken down over the next few days.

American League East – This has been the strongest division in baseball for quite a while now.  If you’re looking for the best looking players, in my opinion this is also the division in which to find them.

New York Yankees: The reigning World Series champions & off to the best start in nearly 100 years.  They have won 27 World Championships, which is the most by any team in professional sports.  Notable names are pretty much everyone in the lineup: Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Texiera, Mariano Rivera, Robinson Cano, Jorge Posada, CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte, Nick Swisher, Curtis Granderson

Tampa Bay Rays: A young team with a lot of potential & a lot of heart.  They currently lead the AL East & are the only other team in that division to make the playoffs (aside from the Yankees & Red Sox) in the past 10 or so years.  Remember the name Evan Longoria (not Eva, Evan).  He is the next big superstar & is super adorable.  Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, BJ Upton & David Price are all some good names to remember.

Boston Red Sox: Off to their worst start since 1996 this year.  They tried to pick up more reliable pitching & fielding in the offseason, but that hasn’t worked out too well for them so far.  They have been one of the best teams in baseball over the past few years, so they really need to turn it around if they want to keep pace with the Yankees & Rays again.  Notable names for them are Josh Beckett, Kevin Youkilis, Jacoby Ellsbury, David Ortiz aka Big Papi, Jonathan Paplebon & John Lackey.

Toronto Blue Jays: Trying to make a case for themselves so far this season, but haven’t been very successful in recent memory.  They lost their best pitcher, Roy Halladay (who is arguably the best pitcher in baseball) in the off-season but the homerun power has been certainly coming through for them.  They currently have a major league best, 24 homeruns at home.  Notables include Adam Lind, Vernon Wells & Aaron Hill.

Baltimore Orioles: Pretty much the worst team in baseball right now.  Yes, they swept the Red Sox but they were also swept by the Yankees the next series.  They’ve been in the basement of the AL East pretty often & it doesn’t look like that’s about to change anytime soon.  They have some great young talent, but if you don’t have pitching then you’re never going to win.  Some names to know are Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Miguel Tejada, Brian Roberts & Matt Wieters.

That’s all the time I have for now, come back tomorrow for your tutorial on the NL East.
