Welcome to the Big Leagues, Baby

Last night was the long awaited big-league debut of Stephen Strasburg.  He was the #1 pick in the 2009 draft & almost a year to the day, made it the big show.  He was very highly regarded & the kid certainly did not disappoint.  As a matter of fact, he completely went beyond all expectations.  He struck out 14 batters in 7 innings & didn’t walk a batter.  Nobody has ever struck out that many in their debut without a walk & only 2 other pitchers in history have struck out more their first time out.  What’s more is that he tied for most strikeouts in a game this season among all pitchers, not just rookies.  Keep in mind that this is a year that 2 (3*) perfect games & a no-hitter have been thrown.

The Washington Nationals were formerly the Montreal Expos, who moved to D.C. because they weren’t getting anybody at the games.  The Nats haven’t been doing much better in that department.  That was until Stephen Strasburg made his debut.  Last night was a sold out crowd with standing room only packed.  When the kid got his first strikeout, I’m sure Obama heard it at the White House.  14th strikeout? I think I may have heard it in Connecticut.  His next start was announced to be against Cleveland & not so shocking, the Indians have sold out already.  He’s something to see & I personally can’t wait to see what awaits his career.
