Can I Have Your Autograph?

Can’t you just smell the turf and pig skin!? NFL training camps are upon us, and prior to suiting everyone up, the 2011 Super Bowl Champions, the Baltimore Ravens, decided on a new autograph policy that might catch on around the league.

Apparently, to make it safer for players & fans alike, the Ravens have decided to have a CHILDREN-ONLY autograph policy. This session is to ONLY take place after morning sessions, not afternoon sessions. This means that children ages 6-15 can go on the field after each practice and get their favorite player’s John Hancock.

Now, I’ve been to my share of training camps, and I believe this is one of the best ways these organizations get in touch with the fan-base. Mostly for free, people can come and watch their favorite quarter back toss, favorite receiver run routes, or even favorite vet sit on the sidelines and do nothing. After practices, the players are typically willing to take 15-30 minutes to go down the line of fans (who have all either taken a day off work or woke up at the butt-crack of dawn) and sign whatever memorabilia they might have ponied up for that day. Some of the time you can catch the team’s superstar, and others you see them walking back into the lockerroom to attend lifting or whatever duties they have going on next – it is usually hit or miss.

With this new policy, however, it brings a certain pain to loyal fans that make it a tradition to come out every year to try and get an autograph to add to their collection, or to just grab a part of what they love so much. To be honest, I understand training camp is a place to be able to get a sneak peek at the team-to-come, however, the autographs are the icing on the cake!

With the Ravens becoming such a dominate force in the NFL (and giving Baltimore something to cheer for other than a 2-game win streak the O’s might have), yes, more people are going to want to come out and be apart of the organization for day. However, now you are going to get more people peddling their kids to get these autographs (god help us if they have people peddling OTHER PEOPLE’S KIDS!). You are also going to get people who now think it is usless to come to camp since the local news outlets report what happens daily.

Have you seen the types of people that you’d describe as “hardcore autograph seekers?” Do you feel a lot of sympathy for them?

I want to see the bouncer who has to check kids’ IDs to make sure they’re between the ages of 6-15.

Saints will rule again! Yeah, we play Charm City this year…we shall see! 🙂
