The Los Angles Lakers battled it out with the Boston Celtics last Sunday and fell short. But for me the main event was not the Game itself, it was the event held afterwards, Nike’s introduction of the new K.O.B.E. Line. Nike decided to create 3 different kind of Kobe VI for the different neighborhoods in So Cal: East LA, The OC, and Hollywood.

The Launch came with a very cool new Nike productions Movie. “The Black Mamba” is a 7 minute film created by Nike and Directed by Robert Rodriguez, starring Kobe Bryant, Kanye West, and Bruce Willis. This is a MAJOR marketing campaign for Nike to spread the word about the new K.O.B.E Line.  K.O.B.E. stands for:, O.riginate, B.attle, E.levate.

So a friend and I were doing some training out here in LA on Sunday, and came across our very own local Legend Derek Fisher already getting in some work in the off-season. We chatted with him after his work out and he even let my friend snag a photo. He’s  great dude that loves his fans, and the fans love him back for that very reason. Thanks for making this JC’s Sunday. GO LAKERS!

Free Agent Frenzy

I was at a bbq this afternoon with a number of work friends & as I work in a sports industry, the topic of conversation is 9 times out of 10, surprise! Sports.  I was trying to think of what I should blog about today & the overwhelming topic that everyone was discussing was NBA free agency.  Since this is obviously the hottest topic right now, whatchu think I’m writing about?  You guessed it, friends:  NBA free agency.

The crown jewel of the free agent crown is none other then the King, LeBron James.  Tonight at midnight on the East Coast is when the chaos will begin.  Teams have already made reservations with players to wine & dine them at 12:01 & try to convince them why their team is the best choice.  Dwayne Wade wants to stay in Miami but then again, why would anyone want to leave Miami?  Who will join him?  Will it be Chris Bosh?  Will Dirk Nowitzki go to Chicago?  Will the Big Apple draw in the big man, Amare Stoudemire?  What about the LA Clippers for Paul Pierce?  Will New Jersey net Joe Johnson?  Will I ever stop asking questions & making plays on words?  Nobody knows.  Not yet anyway.  Everyone has their own opinions as to who should go where, but it comes down to one thing: a championship ring.  No matter what happens, we are in for an exciting NBA off-season!

Victory March

Monday was the Lakers Championship Victory Parade. A double-decker bus and an 18 wheel flat-bed truck filled with players was waved on by an estimated 500, 000 to 2 million Lakers fans. People drove from all over the Los Angeles area and beyond ( one lady said she drove over 2 hours) to get a glimpse of their heroes. This parade was for the fans and players to officially celebrate the Lakers 16th NBA title.  A championship series that one was a bit sweeter than all the rest. The Celtics/ Lakers rivalry is one of the best, and all the players agreed that this title meant more to them because they beat the oh so hated Boston Celtics.

The Lakers seemed to be humble winners as they waved for about an hour down Figueroa, from the Staple Center to the USC campus. When asked about next year, they all agreed that a Three-pete was the goal. “When next season starts, we’ll be ready, that’s for sure,” Bryant told reporters. He added that of his five titles, “this is the best one by far because it was the hardest one to get.” One key member not in attendance was head coach, Phil Jackson. He missed the parade due to previously scheduled medical appointments. It is rumored that health issues would be the only thing stopping the “Zen Master” from coaching the Champions again next year.

The real good news here: All the knuckle heads stayed home! Only 9 people were arrested out of the 500, 000. Stay classy, Los Angeles.

Sweet Redemption

Posted: June 18, 2010 by NattieLiz in Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, NBA

On Thursday night the Los Angeles Lakers fought tooth and nail to win Game 7 of the NBA Finals, making them Back to Back NBA CHAMPIONS!!!!! The Lakers came out seeking redemption for the Celtics win in the 2008 Finals, and they more than achieved that.

Being a LA native, I was fortunate enough to be here to experience one of the greatest games of the Lakers 2010 season. Every single bar was packing up at 3pm, with a 6pm game tip-off. The Staple Center was insane, and you could feel the excitement and tension in the city all day. I was lucky enough to share a bar stool with my best friend, but my butt cheek didn’t stay down long, because by the 3rd quarter you could not help but stand, scream, cheer, and throw a ton of high fives!

This was one of the worst starts in the entire Lakers season. The Celtics had great and almost unstoppable defense.  The Celtics lead 40- 34 at the half, but this was only the start of one of the toughest wins in Lakers history.  The Celtics kept up their momentum and the Lakers struggled to gain any kind of control. In the 3rd quarter the Celtics were up by double digits, but at the start of the 4th quarter it was a 4 point game.  Then, Los Angeles’s hero, Derek Fisher came in with the 3  to tie it up.  This started the Lakers game winning drive, The Lakers came back from a 13 point deficit to beat Boston 83-79.

Kobe was the Finals MVP, but this was by far his worse game. Artest, was the games MVP, a well deserved honor.  It is his first ring, he had 20 points,  5 rebounds, and 5 steals. The classic quote of the night came from Artest, “I’d like to thank my psychiatrist”.  Hey, he might be crazy, but crazy just paid off!
