It’s Like I Have ESPN or Something…

You may have heard of Paul the Octopus.  For some reason, the people of Germany decided it would be a great idea to have an octopus predict who would win World Cup games.  Amazingly enough, this octopus correctly picked the winner of all 8 of Germany’s games.  Paul decided it would be a good time to retire while he was still undefeated.  Since this octopus was so successful, the idea has caught on.

As we all know, Brett Favre has retired & come out of retirement & done it all over again numerous times.  So the great people of Minnesota took a page out of the German book & got a psychic octopus of their own.  The Minnesota aquarium looked to an octopus named Loki to predict whether or not Favre would retire.  Unfortunately this octopus couldn’t make up it’s mind.  At first Loki said Favre would be retiring but a few minutes later she changed her mind & decided he would be coming back.  Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

World Competition Continues!

If you’re sad to see the World Cup leave us for another four years, and not ready to throw away your love for nations vs. nations competition, look no further than to the Men’s World Lacrosse Championships in Manchester, England. Teams representing 30 nations around the world will face-off to see who is indeed, the best in the world. This includes teams from Ireland, France, Austria, Latvia, Mexico, Slovakia, South Korea, Japan, England, Australia, Canada, and the US (to name a few).

To date, there has already been an issue to compete for one of the top teams – Iroquois Nationals. Scheduled to depart a few days ago, the Iroquois Nationals are prohibited from traveling to UK as the consulant refuses to legally acknowledge their passports. Catching nods from the national news, they’ve already given it a few tries, but are now contacting the British Embassy for help. They recently were just given sanction from the US to have travel visas.

The top teams to watch in this tournament would be the US (stacked with many collegiate and MLL all-stars including Ryan Boyle -Boston Cannons, Brendan Mundorf – Denver Outlaws, Drew Westervelt -Denver Outlaws, Paul Rabil – Boston Cannons, Alex Smith – Washington Bayhawks, Shawn Nadelen – Washington Bayhawks, and Kyle Sweeney – Boston Cannons) and Canada (the favorite to win it all – their box lacrosse style has helped to hone in on their outdoor skills), with Australia and Germany bringing up the rear.

With the opening cermonies underway, fans can enjoy these games only on the web at http://247.tv/lacrosse/fil-world-lacrosse-championships-2010/

The Reign in Spain

Well after 30 days & 63 matches, the World Cup is finally over.  Spain is the World Champion for the first time in their country’s history.  Going into the tournament as the favorite, they were upset early on in the group stage by Switzerland so many wondered if this team could live up to their reputation.  They certainly proved that they could.  The game had no score going into extra time & it looked like it might come down to penalty kicks but in the 116th minute, Andres Iniesta put the ball in the back of the net against the Dutch goalkeeper.  I’m personally a little jealous that I do not live in Spain tonight because I can only imagine the celebration.  Imagine New Years Eve multiplied by your team winning the SuperBowl multiplied by an entire country adding to the fact that Europeans are far more passionate then Americans & I’m no math whiz, but I think that equals the happiest place on earth.  Felicitaciones (or however congratulations is spelled in Spanish!)

The “Soccer Model” Curse

Posted: July 7, 2010 by NattieLiz in Soccer, World Cup

It has been said, that it is a curse to be beautiful (which we all know is false, its effin’ AWESOME!)… But when it comes to the boys of the World Cup… It may actually be true! Back in June, Vanity Fair blessed us with their World Cup Edition. There were 12 soccer studs from different countries modeling in their underwear. We can’t hate on that.. but here’s the catch:

None of these 12 made it pass the quarter finals, except for one, Michael Ballack of Germany…but he never played a single game because he was injured. Our very own US stud, Landon Donovan: ousted. Ghana’s Midfielder, Sulley Muntari, scored a goal from 35 yards against Uruguay, BUT was ousted none the less. Not even hottie Christiano Ronaldo could beat the curse of the Soccer Model. (My theory: the hotter you are, the worse you do).

In addition, it appear that the boys of the Nike, “Write the Future” Ad, have suffered the same ill fate. Nearly every soccer player prominently featured in the popular World Cup ad had an extremely poor World Cup showing with many of them crashing out in the group stages — If that doesn’t spell curse – I don’t know what does!

The moral of the story: Yes, soccer players: We know you are one of the hottest athletic species on the planet earth, but if you want to win, it appears you have to conserve all that hotness for the field… Sorry ladies, but no one wants to date a loser!

In addition, there seems to be one player who is well-known for his side job of “Soccer Modeling”. Ironically enough, he didn’t play with his Team this year in the World Cup due to injury…Coincidence?? I think NOT!   http://www.flickr.com/photos/olivepress/3467180/

Posted: June 30, 2010 by NattieLiz in Fans, World Cup

Hey Chasers!

Over the weekend I took an amazing girls to trip to none other than, Sin City… Las Vegas, NV. (hence the fact why I didn’t post anything over the weekend). I am lucky enough to have great girl friends that love Sports just as much as I do. So the first stop Saturday morning was to go check out the USA game against Ghana in the World Cup. As we all know now, the outcome didn’t go our way… but even though we lost, I am sure every one here is so proud of our boys. Great Job!

Now here’s your chance to see what its like when LA girls take on Sin City to watch the World Cup… Enjoy!

Elite Eight

Posted: June 30, 2010 by amyaubrey in Soccer, World Cup

I’m pretty sure they don’t call it the Elite 8 in soccer but that’s what i call it.  The World Cup has been narrowed down to eight teams.  Today was a very big game against Spain & my boyfriend Cristiano’s team, Portugal.  The US is gone & so are some of the early favorites, such as France, England & the last World Cup champ Italy.

There will be a break for a few days & the next game will be on Friday & here’s what we’ve got left in Eastern Standard Time…

Friday, 10 AM: Netherlands v Brazil

Friday, 2 PM: Uruguay v Ghana

Saturday, 10 AM: Argentina v Germany

Saturday: 2 PM: Paraguay v Spain

These should all be good games, especially Argentina-Germany.  All I know is that I’m in a couple of contests & I’ve got 2 of the 8 teams left so I’ve got a pretty good chance of winning!
