A great story comes to us from Oakland, CA & the A’s ball boy.  During a game against the Rays the other day, the A’s bullpen pitchers pointed out a girl in the stands to their ball boy.  Thinking she was cute, they told him that every foul ball he got that night, he should give to her.  So first ball he gets, he points at her & gives her the ball.   He did this three more times to bring her total of souvenirs to 5. The 5th one came from a security guard with a note on it that said “How about a phone number for our ball man, Kevin.”  So she obliged & wrote down her phone number to give to him.

The next day not only did they have their first date but they also got to be on ESPN 3 days in a row.  They went out to eat & reported back to let America know how the date went.  He took her to a very expensive restaurant & the check was picked up by the A’s bullpen pitchers.  Even if it doesn’t work out with these two, what a great story to tell your friends!  Best of luck kids!

Perfect!

Tonight, history was made in baseball: the 19th perfect game in history was thrown by Dallas Braden of the Oakland A’s.  A perfect game is when a pitcher doesn’t give up any hits or walk any batters & there are no errors made by the fielders.  Throwing a no-hitter is a big deal, but a perfect game is even more impressive.

Earlier this week, I was actually going to write a little blurb about Braden but for a very different reason.  He was running his mouth about some unwritten baseball rule that nobody ever heard of before.  Alex Rodriguez was running back to the dugout & crossed the mound while Braden was on it.  Braden kept going on & on about how A-Rod has no respect for the game because of that stupid little incident.  He even came back with more comments this week & it was just out of hand.  Alex said he didn’t want to comment because he didn’t want to extend Braden’s 15 minutes of fame.  I was not a big Braden fan until tonight & he has extended those 15 but for a much better reason.

I’m not jumping on the bandwagon just because the guy threw a perfecto, I just love his story.  When he was 14 years old, his mom died of cancer.  His grandmother raised him ever since then.  Today at the ballpark, it was in honor of him that they had section 209 discounts because that was his area code when he was growing up in the Oakland area.  So today, on Mother’s Day when all of Major League Baseball uses all things pink to raise awareness of cancer & on a day that his grandmother was there to watch, he threw a perfect game.  The last perfect game thrown for the A’s?  Almost exactly 42 years ago to the day, on May 8, 1968 by Hall of Famer Jim “Catfish” Hunter.

Asked to comment, Alex Rodriguez just said, “good for him.”  The mound is now all yours, Dallas.  Well done.
